Issues in Indian History, Politics and Society; Select Newspaper Articles and Book Reviews

The writings collected here are at times immediate responses to events, at others well considered, but always with understanding that has evolved over four decades in the professional career of a historian/teacher. Some of the issues analysed go back a long time into the past. The most frequently occurring issue is the specific Indian phenomenon of communalism in its several facets. As our society evolves, so does our understanding of it. Also included in the collection are a few reviews of books, especially those with wider reach than ones which are the preserve of academics.
