The British were responsible for the large-scale deforestation and mass destruction of the wildlife. But they were also the people who became aware of their preservation and tried to regulate various laws. Under the provision of Wildlife (protection) Act, 1972, any area can be declared by the State government as a sanctuary or national park in case the concerned area needs protection and conservation for its ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphologic and zoological significance. The Central government can establish a sanctuary or national park with the consent of the concerned State governments. In November 1972, the Indian Wildlife Board chose the tiger as the national animal of India. A national scheme called the 'Project Tiger' was launched to protect the dangerously depleting species. There is no single species, which is found in neighborhood, but not in India. There are transition zones, e.g., the fauna of Indian That desert is also common in Pakistan. The animals of dry Himalayas (Ladakh) are common in India and Nepal.
