With the beginning of a phase of generational transition, China's new leadership change in 2012 with is undoubtedly one of the most significant internal developments in the contemporary history of the country. This change has huge ramifications for not only the internal social, economic and political dynamics of China, but also for regional security. The transformation has been peaceful so far, with a focus on economic and political reforms. However, several paradoxes and contradictions still exist within Chinese society, domestic politics and foreign policy. In collaboration with the India International Centre (IIC), Department of East Asian Studies in Delhi University and the Centre for East Asian Studies in Jawaharlal Nehru University, the China Research Programme (CRP) at the Institute has been observing these developments closely through its research, discussions, conferences and annual dialogues at the national Ievel. The essays in this volume on political leadership, social and economic issues are the subsequent result of a series of discussions and debates. With overarching themes based on political developments, the new leadership transition, social change and economic crisis, this volume aims at focusing on issues that need further discussion and debate to understand what is happening within contemporary China.
