The Indian Verbenaceae has 105 species and 11 varieties belonging to 19 genera. The systematic treatment, the most important part, is preceded by a historical review which also includes information on distribution, fossil history, cytology, palynology and economic importance. Taxa upto infraspecific level are keyed out and arranged alphabetically. Each genus is provided with a taxonomic history followed by an Indian history. For each genus the correct name with original citation is followed by references to taxonomic/monographic works including flora of neighbouring countries. Synonyms are also cited. Genera and species are described in detail. Nomenclatural citation for a species includes the correct name and almost all synonyms in Indian works. Floras upto district level and monographs/revisions are also cited. Citations are followed by local name (s). Types are indicated for all names and names are typified wherever necessary/ possible. Information on phenology, habitat and distribution follows description. Notes on nomenclature, taxonomy, distribution etc. are provided wherever desirable. Information on chromosome number and pollen grains is added where available. This work is an importance of monographic works in the current scenario of biodiversity crisis.
