About The Author: Thomas Holbein Hendley CIE (1847–1917), a British medical officer in the Indian Medical Service, achieved the rank of Colonel before retiring. He excelled academically at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London and joined the Indian Medical Service in 1869. He served as Residency Surgeon in Jaipur from 1873 to 1897, then became Inspector-General of Hospitals in the North-West Provinces and later in Bengal. Besides his medical career, Hendley was a passionate advocate for Indian art, co-designing the Jaipur Gate in 1886. He published books on Indian art, co-founded the Quarterly Journal of Indian Art, and contributed significantly to cultural institutions.
