Gordon-Cumming's extensive travels primarily took her to Asia and the Pacific, where she left a remarkable legacy as a prolific travel writer and landscape painter. Her artistic output included over a thousand watercolors, and she adhered to a personal motto of never letting a day pass without creating at least one meticulously colored sketch. Among the many places she visited were Australia, New Zealand, America, China, and Japan. Notably, she arrived in Hilo, Hawaii, in October 1879, becoming one of the first artists to capture the vibrant beauty of the active volcanoes through her paintings.
