Health is not just an attribute of individuals; it is also a reflection of the social environment in which an individual experiences life. How a society values and understands health will determine in great part how the individuals in society experience health. Even more, it will determine what society and individuals can do about health, how health will be measured and how the society's medical care services will be evaluated. The overall objective of the book is to examine the relationship of health, nutrition and economic development in the light of the experience of different countries in the past. Specifically, the objectives are: (1) To measure the general health and nutrition status amongst all the countries; (2) To work out the inter-relationship between health, nutrition education, investment and economic development; (3) To work out the effect of physical capital, labour force and human capital on output or GDP; (4) to prepare health and nutrition index and composite index representing health and nutrition and compare the position of countries; (5) To work out the nature of change in degree of inequalities in health and nutrition.
