ABOUT THE BOOK -: This book tells us about the flora of British India. It says that the first general local flora that has been prepared for India, though various floras for forest purposes only have already appeared. Other general floras, for what are wider areas, are in course of preparation for Bengal, Bombay and the Upper Gangetic Plain; but although these floras will apply to whole provinces, or at any rate to areas as large as provinces, they will, none of them, cover so wide a vertical range.It gives all information about plants growing at all altitudes, from the Himalayan valleys only a little raised above sea-level to elevations of 12,000 and even of 16,000 feet. ABOUT THE AUTHOR -: Sir Henry Collett (1836 -1901) He joined the Bengal Army on 8 June 1855, rising through the ranks to become a Lieutenant colonel in 1879. In the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–80) he acted as Quartermaster general on the staff of Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts. He was promoted Colonel in 1884, made KCB in 1891, and from 1892 to 1893 he commanded the Peshawar district with the rank of Major-general. He retired from the army in 1893. He was one of the founding members of the Simla Naturalists' Society. At his death he was working on a book on the flora of Simla, which was published posthumously as Flora Simlensis (1902).
