Kerala is the natural home of many of our crop plants and their wild relatives, besides a large number of medicinal and other economically important species which is shrinking rapidly leading to lose of native biodiversity. Keeping this in mind a flouristic study of the Kerala Forests is the most urgent need of the day hence the author chose Nilambur on the spring board. Nilambur forms the eastern sector of Malappuram districts and includes the ranges and spurs of western ghats. It is the home of the oldest teak plantation in Asia established in 1842. In Nilambur patches of forests are scattered among vested forests and private holdings and the altitude varies from 100 m to 2700 m. In all 1132 species of 665 genera belonging to 130 families are described in the book. This book is of immense use for the teachers and students of botany and for the botanists, foresters, environmentalists and the general public who are interested in the forest wealth of Kerala.
