In this book twelve genera of the Rosaceae, sensu lato, are treated. Two genera, Atuna and Parastemon, are placed in the segregate family Chrysobalanaceae; Neurada is separated to the Neuradaceae. The remaining nine genera belong to the Rosaceae, sensu stricto. Rosaceae are customarily divided into four subfamilies: Spiraeoideae, Rosoidae, Maloidae (Pomoideae), and Amygdaloideae (Prunoideae). The Spiraeoideae of India are treated in their entirety in the present volume, along with three of the six tribes of Rosoideae that occur in India: Ulmarieae, Dryadeae, and Sanguisorbeae. The taxonomic treatment here represents a major work that increases our knowledge of both the Rosaceae and the flora of India. After thoroughly reviewing the literature and examining large numbers of herbarium specimens the authors have synthesized a modern account of these plants. The taxonomic treatment is complete with detailed descriptions, synonymy, typifications, excellent line drawings, distribution maps, and information on ecology, economic importance, and phenology.
