Development refers to "a process through which the potentialities of an object or organism are released, until it reaches its natural, complete, full-fledged form". India as a nation took a complete U-turn in the year 1991 when it jettisoned the path of socialistic pattern of controlled and guided economy to usher in liberalized and market guided globalized economic system to march on to the west-style open market economy. Since then, two decades have passed, the experience of last two decades of the reform has not boarded well for the Indian economy. The onslaught of western mode of economic growth has been so exhaustive, forceful and complete that the Indian nation finds itself in a quagmire of contrast, contradiction and dilemma. Today it seems Indian nationhood has lost the equanimity with which it had cruised so along to meet its destined goals set by our founding fathers. In the political sphere, the negative tendencies like-promoting communal disharmony to make political gains, selfish plunder of natural assets and swindling public money, hording of commodity of daily need, artificial jacking up prices through unethical economic practices causing inflation, abdicating of state responsibility in protecting the life of citizens, are rampant. In the other fields whether social or cultural and religious the issues are similar and the challenges insurmountable. Today, the Indian nation is at the crossroads. It is the time when balanced and realistic decision in keeping with the desires and aspirations of the masses at all the levels needs to be taken.
