It is a book containing well-researched articles on local good governance and grassroots development in India in general and West Bengal in particular. All the papers seek to critically analyse the available secondary material in order to identify the issues of concern and suggest remedial measures. Primary data have however been generated and used of two articles which seek to explore dynamics of the working of the grassroots democratic institutions in rural with the emerging dynamics and critical issues concerning good governance and participatory development at the grassroots level. About The Author:- An eminent scholar in the field of local Government and politics in India in general and West Bengal, in particular, Prabhat Datta holds the Centenary Chair of Professor of Public Administration in the Department of Political Science, Calcutta University and is the Honorary Adjunct Professor, Institute Development Studies Kolkata. A widely-travelled Professor in India and abroad Professor Datta has to his credit 24 books including four monographs. He has published a few dozen articles in Indian and foreign journals. He was a member of the University Grants Commission’s Panel on Political Science and Public Administration (1996-98). He worked on the executive committee of the professional bodies like Indian Political Science Association and Indian Public Administration Association. He has served on a number of Committees constituted by the Government of West Bengal for different purposes. He is the editor-in-chief of Urban Management, a journal published by Institute of Local Government and Urban Studies, Government of West Bengal. He is the joint editor of a bi-annual news magazine Saksharata Samachar published by the West Bengal.
