About The Book: This book contain The excerpt from "Catholic Missions in Southern India to 1865" discusses the vastness of the British Empire and its possession of the peninsula of Hindostan, which is home to a population of at least 150 million people. The diverse population of India is unified by the influence of the Brahminical religion, which is prevalent throughout the continent. The earliest Christian writers and traditions indicate that St. Thomas the Apostle preached in India, and this is supported by the discovery of artifacts such as a copper plate engraved with half-obliterated letters, a bronze cross, and a white marble slab with a carved cross and dove found in various parts of the country. These discoveries attest to the existence of Christianity in India dating back to ancient times. About The Author: Rev. W. Strickland (1817-1901), He was twelve years military chaplain in India. They wrote many books like, The Jesuit in India; addressed to all who are interested in the foreign missions and Catholic Missions in Southern India to 1865. He resigned in 1860 after a controversy due to a pamphlet he wrote critical of Anglican missionary work. He published Tabulated Reports on Roman Catholic Schools, inspected in the South and East of England and in South Wales, 1859. A later work by him, Christian Missions; their Agents, their Method, and their Results, 3 vols. London, 1862, went through several editions in the UK and the United States; it was translated into French and other European languages, and Pope Pius IX awarded the author the cross of the Order of St. Gregory.
