About the book:- During his missionary career in Ceylon Rev. Charles Henry Carter has compiled this dictionary. He arrived in Emerald Isle in 1853 as a Missionary of the Baptist Missionary Society. He set himself at once to acquire knowledge of the Sinhalese language, in which he made rapid progress, and was able to preach his first sermon four months after his arrival. During his staying he attained such a command of the language as has been rarely or ever equalled by Europeans. The author, who commenced the work in 1892, has put into the compilation what would equal ten years consecutive labour. This is the best of its kind and is in general use. He is the author of various works for the acquisition of the language. His aim in all these labours has been service to Ceylon. This discourse will work for the benefit of Ceylon, especially for Missionary work. It is also stated that the work is much fuller and more valuable than any other dictionary of the Sinhalese language yet published, and will supply to a great extent the want of a good dictionary much felt at present. This book is immensely good for all. About the author:- Charles Henry Carter was a Baptist missionary to Ceylon. Son of Thomas Carter, a stonemason, and his wife Anne (née Thomson), he was raised near Leicester, UK. While working as a miller for an uncle, he was converted to Christianity. He was baptised at Arnesby by the Rev M. Davis. He began preaching and immediately gaining acceptance amongst the Baptists of Leicestershire. He volunteered for service in India but his destination was altered to Ceylon. The change in plans was considered providential. His replacement for India perished in Delhi during the Great Mutiny.
