About the Book:-The need of a modern English-Persian Dictionary can scarcely be questioned, the massive volumes edited many years ago by noted scholars respectively being out of print and well-nigh unprocurable; in any case, also, for various reasons. They are by no means suited to the requirements of the present day, while the few other works which have approved are, for the most part, compilations by natives of India, unacquainted with the spirit of the English language, and at best they rise but little beyond the level of vocabularies. In these circumstances, as he knows from personal experience, a student is beset with difficulties, and from this point of view no apology is needed for an attempt to fill the void so serious and perplexing. But, on reflection, it at once became evident that such a mode of procedure would not ensure a practical result, for the obvious reason that, when translating from Persian into English, the student needs the use of every word, however pedantic and scare, which is to be found any author of note; on the other hand, as regards rendering from English to Persian, the introduction of obsolete or neglected phraseology into a Dictionary would retard rather than assist the learner, who would be likely to possess that knowledge and experience which alone could enable him to select suitable and fitting equivalents. So, this work will serve a good purpose for student, learner, teacher and academician. About the Author :-Sir Arthur Naylor Wollaston K.C.I.E was born in 1842 and passed away in 1922.
