Modern day agronomy faces huge challenges in order to secure food supplies for an increasingly hungry world. In this regard, there is growing awareness of the need to intensify crop production in the humid tropics by increasing crop yields on land already under cultivation to satisfy increasing demand for food, fibre and fuel in response to growing populations with increased per capita incomes.
