He became an insurance clerk at Lloyd's of London and achieved success in his profession. However, his career was interrupted when he joined the military during the First World War at the age of 40. Initially enlisting in the Grenadier Guards, he later joined the Royal Army Pay Corps and rose to the rank of Corporal.His novel A Voyage to Arcturus was published in 1920, it did not garner significant success, The novel exhibited connections to Scottish fantasy writers like George MacDonald, whose work Lindsay was acquainted with, and it exerted a profound influence on C.S.
