About the Book:-This book is a short guide to the city of Lucknow that offers brief descriptions of Allahabad and Kanpur (Cawnpore). The principal historical monuments are described with special references to their action in the revolt of 1857. The book has two maps, one of Lucknow and the other of Kanpur. This book is a reprint of the 1875 edition. The book contains are mainly meant as an aid to the traveller visiting Lucknow. Both the historical cities contain matter of interest to pave the way for this book. The author adopts the government system of transliteration. The vowels a, I, and u are pronounced as in the English ‘ruminant’; except when accented when the sound is broader. The other vowels as in ‘obey’. About the Author:-Henry George Keene was an English employee of the East India Company, as soldier, civil servant, and orientalist. He was known as a Persian scholar, and also was a churchman and academic. Keene went to India as a cadet in the Madras Presidency army about 1798, and shortly after became adjutant of a sepoy regiment, which formed part of the brigade commanded by Colonel Arthur Wellesley. In May 1799 it took part in the siege of Seringapatam, where Keene led the company carrying the scaling-ladders for the storming party (4 May).
