About The Author: James Edward Tierney Aitchison (1835-1898) was a Scottish surgeon and botanist who served as the British Commissioner to Ladakh, India, in 1872. During his tenure, he collected numerous plant specimens, particularly those of economic interest, amassing around 10,000 specimens of 950 plant species. He also participated in the Afghan Boundary Commission in 1884, collecting another 10,000 specimens of 800 species. Aitchison's botanical work earned him recognition as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and London, and he was named a Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1883. His herbaria are preserved at Kew Gardens and Calcutta.
